An Open-Air Museum: Cities & Villages to Discover
Walk Through History and Discover Its Most Authentic Side
Northern Lazio and the Tuscan Maremma are dotted with countless towns and villages, large and small, where time seems to have stood still.
Whether you are passionate about the Middle Ages or eager to discover the splendor of the Renaissance, one of the best ways to experience this heritage is by walking through the historic center of one of these towns. Even the smallest and seemingly most unassuming village can reveal a remarkable and glorious past — you just need to know where to look.

Why Take a Walk Through Historic Town Centers?
The landscape of southern Tuscany, Umbria, and northern Lazio is characterized by the absence of large cities and extensive urban settlements.
These are sparsely populated areas, with relatively little urban development. Long roads wind through unspoiled landscapes, countryside, and forests, connecting historic towns that, although small in size, have preserved the charm of their ancient past.
An Unforgettable Journey Through Places That Shaped History
Even the smallest village often holds a history that stretches back thousands of years. The urban fabric, the walls of houses, and the churches tell stories of lords and wars, merchants and pilgrims, as well as ancient traditions that have survived and been passed down from one generation to the next.

Medieval Jewels
Although many of these towns have origins dating back to the Etruscan period, it was especially during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance that their landscapes acquired many of the features we see today. In particular, the thousand years of the medieval period saw the rebuilding of fortified settlements, the construction of parish churches and religious buildings, and the organic, often spontaneous development of towns that seem to grow directly out of the rock on which they stand.

The Legacy of the Church and Great Families
Towns that today may seem far removed from the centers of power were often shaped by some of the most influential families of the past, leaving behind echoes of a former age of splendor.
The Farnese and the Duchy of Castro, the Aldobrandeschi, and the Orsini, particularly through the County of Pitigliano, were among the noble families that most profoundly transformed these lands. They employed highly skilled craftsmen and distinguished architects, leaving behind extraordinary treasures waiting to be discovered at a leisurely pace — in places where, thanks in part to the care of generations of inhabitants, time often seems to have stood still.
